PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic display device capable of obtaining sufficient color density and high speed of display response. SOLUTION: The electrochromic display device has an electrochromic material layer 3 and a molten salt electrolyte layer 4 which are interposed between a first and a second transparent electrodes 2 and 5 opposed to each other. The electrochromic material layer has a fine and a rugged structure on its surface and <=100 nm film thickness. And the specific surface area of the surface of the electrochromic material layer is >=100.
