PURPOSE: To provide a position management method for a mobile terminal, whose processing load can be reduced when retrieving a path of each mobile terminal and of updating position information in a mobile wireless packet communication system, and to provide the system. CONSTITUTION: This method and system provides a position management method for a mobile terminal in the mobile wireless packet communication system, where communication nodes up to a base station are configured hierarchically, and each communication node from a communication node placed on the highest layer to the base station in decentralized manner manages the path from the communication node placed in the highest layer to the base station of a cell, in which the mobile terminal is resident as position information of the mobile terminal.
