PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrostatic gas bearing spindle, in which the axial displacement of an end of a main shaft due to thermal variations during rotation and a change of bearing performance can be controlled and which has superior mechanical strength. SOLUTION: A bearing sleeve 12, fitted against a surface of inside diameter of a housing 1, is provided. A main shaft 2 is rotatably supported by a bearing surface 3a, having a plurality of fine throttling openings arranged on the bearing sleeve 12 via a hydrostatic pressure gas. The bearing sleeve 12 is formed by a carbon material. At least the main shaft 2, selected from either the housing 1 or the main shaft 2, is formed by ceramic or a ceramic/aluminium composite material which has a linear expansion coefficient close to that of the carbon material.
