PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine that can perform an air-fuel ration leaning control suitable for fuel property during usage in a simpler structure and effectively reduce the discharge of HC just after start. SOLUTION: During catalyst temperature rise promotion control for delaying an ignition time IGLOG so as to increase suction air amount and match engine rotation speed NE to a desired rotation speed, the fuel during usage is determined as normal gasoline to permit the air-fuel ration leaning control (S195, S196) when the ignition time IGLOG is a fuel property determination threshold IGKLST or less. When the ignition time IGLOG is not delayed to the fuel property determination threshold IGKLST, the fuel during usage is determined as low volatile gasoline to prohibit the air-fuel ratio leaning control.
