A composition (I) comprising at least one nucleic acid (NA) of /> 1000 base pairs and a mineral particle (Ia) with an exchangeable layer structure, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a composition (II) comprising at least a NA and (Ia) with the formula: (MII1-xMIIIx(OH2))x+(Xx/mm-.nH2O)x- where MII is magnesium, MIII is aluminum, Xm- is an interlamellar carbonate, and m is an integer /- 1, x is 0-1, and n is /> 0; (2) preparing (I) and (II); and in vitro or ex vivo transferring (M1) NAs into cells, comprising: (a) forming (I) or (II); and (b) contacting the cells with (I) or (II).
