PURPOSE: A character service method in a key phone system is provided to efficiently transfers a message to a subscriber who is under a telephone call, by allowing the second subscriber terminal to transmit a character message to the first subscriber terminal under the telephone call, when an incoming call occurs in the first subscriber terminal while it makes the telephone call. CONSTITUTION: When a busy signal is received from the first subscriber terminal(S1), the first function code that represents a character input start is inputted(S2). The second function code, which means selection of the character string registered in advance, is inputted via the second subscriber terminal(S3). A subscriber process part stores the selected character string in an internal buffer(S4). The third function code, which represents the input of a new character, is inputted(S5). The subscriber process part stores the character information corresponding to an inputted number key in the buffer(S6). The process part sends the stored character information to a CPU(S7,S8). The process part transmits a character information display instruction to the first subscriber terminal(S9,S10).
