Quantitatively determining the water content, especially the chemical oxygen requirement and/or the total organic carbon, in a water sample comprises partially atomizing the water sample in a gas phase containing an oxidant and quantifying the consumption of oxidant and/or oxidation product formed using a gas phase measurement. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the above process comprising a reactor (4), a water sample introduction device (3), an atomizing device (19), an oxidant introduction device (9, 10), a detector (12) for the oxidant and/or oxidation product concentration which delivers signals correlated with the concentrations, and an evaluation device for signals of the detector.
