PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an activated carbon serving as an electrode which significantly improves the capacitance per unit volume beside being of high-density. SOLUTION: An activated carbon is produced so that the BET specific surface area is 10 m2g or larger, and after it is reheated at above 2,800 deg.C, the interplanar spacing of the graphite crystal is 0.34 nm or smaller if measured with the X-ray diffraction method, the crystal lattice in the c-axis direction (Lc) is 10 nm or larger in thickness, that in the a-axis direction (La) 10 nm or larger in size.
