PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily determine a target microbe even in the case that a microbe other than the target is also mixed in a culture medium, and to easily determine the target microbe even without expertise. SOLUTION: A liquid culture medium 7 and a coloration indicator 8 for carbon dioxide are held in a receptacle 3 under a condition that they are separated by a bag 4 made of a carbon dioxide-permeable membrane intercepting the medium 7. The medium 7 hastens the propagation of a specific bacterium and restrains the propagation of other specific bacterium in such a way that the specific bacterium discharges a specific amount of carbon dioxide by propagation from at least the same number of bacteria in a range of the specific number of bacteria in a shorter time than the other specific bacterium. A specimen subject to inspection is thrown into the medium 7, the receptacle 3 is airtightly closed and time from the closure to detection of a specific density of coloration due to the color reaction of the indicator 8 is measured. The time is compared with time from closure to a specific density of color change due to the color reaction of the indicator 8 every number of bacteria of the specific bacterium in order to determine the number of bacteria.
