A method of chemical conversion comprises the conversion of a compound by contact with a reactive gas in a reactor containing a suspension of solid particles and extraction of a flow of suspension containing the conversion product for separation into a solution with reduced solid particle content and a solution with enriched content for feedback to the reaction, in which the flow is delayed. The flow between the reactor and the separation unit is arranged to ensure the total kinetic energy loss to the flow is divided into a number of smaller losses. The energy loss is below that which would cause significant fragmentation of the particles in the suspension. An Independent claim is also included for an installation comprising: (a) one or more conversion zones containing a liquid to be converted, solids in suspension and one or more reactive gases, and equipped with means to draw off gaseous effluent and a suspension of solid particles in the reaction product, (b) a separation section into which is directed at least part of the suspension, and which produces the reaction product with a reduced content of suspended particles and a suspension enriched in solid particles, (c) means of reintroducing the enriched suspension to the conversion zone, and (d) a zone located between draw off and reentry points, containing a means of dividing the total energy loss into a number of smaller losses.
