PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a device which can sufficiently display an image of medium gradation with high luminance while decreasing the number of parts. SOLUTION: The light of three colors resolved (divided) by a color wheel 24 enters a polarizing beam splitter 25 and exits in the two directions as polarized light. The light emitted in the two directions is modulated by two reflection type liquid crystal panels 26, 27 into the image light divided into a plurality of gradations, and then the light is synthesized in the polarization beam splitter 25 and projected. When the two reflection type liquid crystal panels 26, 27 have the maximum gradations n, m respectively, the maximum gradation in the projected image is n+m-1. |
