PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for simply and accurately measuring a very small amount of formaldehyde contained in air whithin a room or the like. SOLUTION: An aqueous solution of gallic acid and hydrogen peroxide and formaldehyde are reacted in an alkaline aqueous solution in a reaction part A and the intensity of emitted light with a wavelength of 560-850 nm generated by this reaction is measured in a luminous intensity measuring part B and the amount of formaldehyde is measured from the intensity of emitted light in an operation part C and the operation result is displayed on a display part D. When carbonate or bicarbonate of alkali metal is further added to the alkaline aqueous solution, stable luminescence can be obtained. A photomultiplier 4 is used in the measurement of luminous intensity.
