A heartburn and reflux disease treatment apparatus comprises a restriction device (56) implantable in a patient for engaging the stomach close to the cardia or, which is preferred, engaging the esophagus (58) to form a restricted food passageway in the stomach or esophagus. The restriction devi ce is operable by an implantable operation device (60) to change the restrictio n of the food passageway.
