A component, e.g. a boot lid, etc. of a motor vehicle, is coated with a powder material, which is subsequently cross-linked. Before cross-linking, a pre-drying process is carried out, until the coating medium is at least partially leveled. During pre-drying, the medium is melted-on and partially cross-linked to a max. of 50%, and is carried out by infrared radiation. Late cross-linking is carried out at temperatures of between 130 deg C and 200 deg C, over a period of max. 7min. dependent upon thickness of the coating.
