Process for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions of a material stream comprises producing a material stream from the sub-stoichiometric combustion of solid, liquid and/or gaseous fuels with an oxidant; forming the product stream at an air ratio in the region of 0.1 <= lambda <= 5 and under atmospheric conditions at a temperature of less than 600 deg C through exothermic pre-reactions; producing a total air ratio of the mixed stream by mixing the product stream into the material stream; and post-oxidizing the residual fuel to temperatures of more than 700 deg C without using a catalyst.
