The invention provides a filter assembly (10; 100) for use in a vacuum cleaner having a first filter portion (14; 150) comprising a foam filter (14a; 120), and a second filter portion (16; 116) located downstream of the first filter portion (14; 150) and consisting of a HEPA grade filter medium, the first and second filter portions (14, 16; 150, 116) being held directly adjacent one another. The first filter portion (14; 150) further comprises an electrostatic filter (14b; 121) located on the side of the foam filter (14a; 120) facing the second filter portion (16; 116). The foam filter (14a; 120) of the first filter portion (14; 150) is, in use, exposed directly to a dust-laden airflow. The provision of the electrostatic filter (14b; 121) on the foam filter (14a; 120) eliminates the possibility of dust initially retained by but later released from the foam filter (14a; 120) escaping from the first filter portion (14; 150).
