Utilizing tar-containing residues comprises mixing the residues with dried clarified sludge containing less than 20, preferably less than 10% water to form flowable granules; drying the granules at 100-130 deg C to drive off water, benzene, odorous materials and easily boiling oils and further materials; and feeding the dried and partially cooled product to a pelleting press via a screw, where a sliding agent is added to the screw in an amount which depends on the temperature of the pellet on leaving the pelleting press which should be 80-130 deg C. Preferred Features: The oil/tar content of the granules is 15-20% on leaving the dryer. The sliding agent is water, water vapor, a part of the oil driven off, molasses or a similar material.
