Production of a permanent magnet alloy powder based on iron comprises chilling a molten Fe-R-B alloy to form a rapidly solidified alloy having a thickness of 80-300 mu m; crystallizing the alloy by heat treating to form an alloy with permanent magnet properties; and pulverizing the alloy to form a powder having an average particle size of 50-300 mu m. The ratio between the size of the minor axis and the size of the major axis of the powder particles is 0.3-1.0. An Independent claim is also included for a permanent magnet alloy powder of formula: Fe100-x-yRxBy (where R = Pr, Nd, Dy or Tb; x = 1-6 atomic %; and y = 15-25 atomic %).
