The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling the drive unit of a vehicle, whereby setpoint input parameters and characteristic parameters are received, which represent the ways and means to set said setpoint input parameters. The setpoint input parameters and the characteristic parameters are independently coordinated in a coordinator and one of the parameters is then selected, which serves as the basis to control the drive unit. The selected setpoint input parameters and characteristic parameters are then converted into regulating signals in a converter, whereby the regulating signals are selected on the basis of the setpoint input parameters and the characteristic parameters, and optionally, by taking into account other operating parameters, especially the operating state of the drive unit.
