The rivet comprises a nail (3) and a locking section which fits through a bore in the materials to be joined and has locating wings (12) which fit against the surface of the top layer. The nail fits through a central hole in the rivet and has shoulder sections (21) which cooperate with U-shaped legs (4') and deform them when the nail is hammered in to lock the rivet in place.
