PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stratified scavenging 2-cycle engine of piston valve type which is reduced in height of engine and reduce in size and weight, by reducing a height of a piston. SOLUTION: An upper edge 14a of a leading air port 14 and an upper edge 15a of an intake port 15 which are provided in an inner wall of a cylinder 10 are arranged on a substantially same height. Extending parts 32 are provided each of which is arranged at a lower end of a position opposite to the leading air port 14 of the piston 30 and extended more downward than a lower edge 31 of the piston positioned opposite to the intake port 15. A space W1 between the right and left extending parts 32 is made larger than a space W2 of an outer width of a balance weight 23 of a crankshaft 20. In an intake stroke, a piston groove 34 for connecting the leading air port 14 and a scavenging port 12 to each other is provided on an outer peripheral surface of each of the extending parts 32, respectively.
