PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of increasing the data transfer speed at a low cost. SOLUTION: This printer 14 is provided with a CPU 16, a ROM 18 and an interface control part 22, etc. The interface control part 22 is provided with a handshake control part 24, a FIFO memory 26 and a control register 28. When a data communication test is performed, a host device 12 outputs test data, indicates that the data is outputted by setting a Strobe signal at a low level and the handshake part 24 replies by setting a Busy signal at a high level by receiving the test data and fetches the data in the FIFO memory. The CPU 16 compares the fetched test data with the test data stored in the ROM 18 and when they are not mutually coincident, sets response time with a larger value than the presently set response time in a control register.
