A lingual orthodontic bracket (42) includes a base member (48) and opposing first and second wings (44, 50). An archwire slot (60) is defined in the base member (48). An O-ring slot (52) is also defined in the base member (48) and is configured to retain the archwire (54) in the archwire slot (60) using a compression-resistant force. An adapter is removably attachable to a non-self ligating lingual orthodontic bracket (42A) and can include a pin (86) that removably secures the adapter to the bracket (42A). A tube (89) on the pin (86) can carry a lockwire (92). The lockwire (92) is capable of swinging between a ligating and a non-ligating position. In its ligating position, the lockwire (92) securely retains an archwire (54) within an archwire slot (60) of the bracket (42A) using shear-resistant properties of the lockwire (92). Methods for removably securing an archwire (54) within the archwire slot (60) of the lingual orthodontic bracket (42) are also provided.
