A method and a tag for the authentication of a commercial object, such a s, for example, designer clothing. A tag is provided on which a security code is printed in thermochromic ink. The thermochromic ink is activatable at a predetermined temperature. The tag is attached to the object. When authentication is needed, the tag is heated above the predetermined temperature, making the security code appear if the object is authentic. Advantageously, the security code may be a production lot number associated with the object, making counterfeiting of both the object and the tag even harder.
