PURPOSE: A method for reducing firing of an engine is provided to prevent the error for detecting the fire in the engine by detecting the fire with adjusting fuzzy amount when a period of oxygen sensor is irregularly varied. CONSTITUTION: An ECU checks whether the fire occurs in an engine(S51). Then, a window is formed for measuring a period of an oxygen sensor(S52). A signal maintaining time and the period of the signal are measured by using the output of the oxygen sensor(S53,S54). The measured signal maintaining time and the period of the signal are compared with a threshold value(S55). If the period of the signal is larger than the threshold value, a purge rate is reduced(S56). If measured signal maintaining time is longer than the threshold value, the purge rate is properly adjusted(S57). Then, a solenoid valve is operated by the adjusted purge rate(S58).
