1395157 Rotary shaft seals RANSOME HOFFMANN POLLARD Ltd and G A TUNE 31 July 1972 [5 Aug 1971] 36866/71 Heading F2B A shaft bearing and seal assembly, particularly for a vehicle water pump, comprises a seal member 14 which is rotatably driven by the shaft 4 and urged axially by a spring 15 into facial sealing contact with a counterface member 13 secured to the outer race 13 of the bearing 1, the spring bearing against a stop member 16 secured to the shaft. The member 14 is sealed to the shaft by an 0-ring 18 and the spring 15 comprises an annular portion 26 and three curved arms 27. The stop member is a circlip 16 engaged in a groove 17 in the shaft and having end portions 29. A retainer 23 having recesses engaged by projections 25 on the member 14 encloses the 0-ring 18. A lug 28 on the spring is engaged by an end portion 29 of the circlip to thereby rotate the spring with the shaft and the seal member 14 is driven from the spring by the ends of the curved arms 27 engaging the projections 25. In a modification, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the retainer (123) has tabs (124) which engage in grooves (125) in the seal member (114) and projections (126) engaged by the ends of the spring arms. The seal and counterface members may be of resin impregnated carbon graphite, stainless steel, nickel, cast iron or Stellite (Registered Trade Mark). |
