PURPOSE: An xDSL system for packet switching is provided to ensure a transmission band over an ATM switching by eliminating an ATM cell switch. CONSTITUTION: A packet-based xDSL subscriber modem(100) comprises an Ethernet interface, a CPU, a memory, and an xDSL modem. The packet-based xDSL subscriber modem(100) is connected to a data terminal(90) and modulates/demodulates in xDSL format a data packet inputted to/outputted from the data terminal(90) to transmit the data packet. The CPU receives the data packet from the data terminal(90) via the Ethernet interface to send the same to the xDSL modem and vice versa, thereby controlling the overall system. The memory is coupled to the CPU and stores a program for use in the operation of the CPU. Also, the memory serves as a temporal storage unit storing the data packet during the transmission thereof.
