PURPOSE: An ADSL modem unit embedded in a personal computer is provided to achieve high-speed data transmission using ADSL technology, as installed inside of a user's personal computer. CONSTITUTION: An ADSL modem unit embedded in a personal computer(400) consists of a line access part(410), a modem part(420), a control part(430), a control data transceiver part(440), and a cell segmentation and reassembly part(450). The line access part(410) is a connector to connect the modem part(420) with a coaxial telephone line. The modem part(420) executing an ADSL modem function generates and recovers ADSL signals. The modem part(420), modulating user data and control data in a DMT(Discrete Multi-Tone) method or forming user data and control data from a DMT, transfers the control data and the user data to the control part(430) and the cell segmentation and reassembly part(450) respectively. The control part(430) controls the modem part(420) according to the control data transmitted from the personal computer and executes a connection function with the other side, a connection release function, and a re-connection function. The cell segmentation and reassembly part(450) restores the user data modulated by the modem part(420) into the original data form and sends the recovered data to the personal computer. Also, the cell segmentation and reassembly part(450) forms the user data sent from the personal computer in the form of an ATM cell and transfers it to the modem part(420). The control data transceiver part(440) executes a pathway function so that the personal computer and the control part(430) can transmit and receive control data each other.
