PURPOSE: The surface acoustic wave device and communications apparatus are provided to reduce the deviation of time characteristic and to easily minimize the device structure. CONSTITUTION: A surface acoustic wave device includes: a piezoelectric substrate(2); a first interdigital transducer(3) provided on a surface of the piezoelectric substrate; a second interdigital transducer(4) provided on the surface of the piezoelectric substrate such that the second interdigital transducer(4) is offset from a direction in which a surface acoustic wave excited by the first IDT(3) propagates; a first edge(2B) provided on the piezoelectric substrate to reflect the excited surface acoustic wave to the first and second interdigital transducers(3,4); and a first coupler(5) having a plurality of metal strips and disposed on the piezoelectric substrate(2), the coupler(5) provided between the first edge(2B) of the piezoelectric substrate and at least one of the first and second interdigital transducers(3,4) so as to be adjacent to the first and second interdigital transducers; wherein the surface acoustic wave device operates using a shear horizontal surface wave.
