The invention relates to the field of xenotransplantation and/or to the detection of retrovirus. The invention provides an isolated or recombinant nucleic acid comprising a consensus retroviral sequence allowing detection of a retroviral genome by nucleic acid hybridisation and/or amplification, said consensus sequence at least partly derived from a novel domestic pig retrovirus genome.
