[Also in Divisions C5 and D1] Compounds having optical brightening properties and a solubility in water of less than 20 g. per litre at 20‹ C. are prepared in the form of hollow beads by spraying the compound while in the aqueous moist flowable state. Preferred compounds are stilbene derivatives of general formula where X is hydrogen, alkali metal or ammonium, Y 1 is amino, or N-phenyl amino optionally substituted by a sulphonic acid group, Y 2 and Y 3 are amino, optionally substituted by one or two alkyl or hydroxy alkyl or a phenyl group, or an N-morpholino-residue, Y 4 is amino, an aniline residue optionally substituted by a sulphonic acid group, or morpholine. Other compounds disclosed are pyrazolines, coumarins, or carbostyril compounds, specifically 1-p-sulphonamidophenyl-3- p - chlorophenyl - pyrazoline, 3 - phenyl - 7- benzotriazolyl - coumarin, and 1 - ethyl - 3- phenyl - 7 - dimethylaminocarbostyril.
