The hinge assembly which includes a flap holder (2) which swivels by applying torque to a drive shaft (5) with partial compensation of the static torque acting on the shaft includes a supplementary compensation produced through a steel spring. Two compression springs (15, 16) acting on a drive arm (14) has one longer spring biasing the drive arm over its displacement path whilst the second shorter spring only acts in the region of the greatest torque. The springs can be arranged in each other in a cylinder to act against a piston (19) which acts with a piston rod (18) on the drive arm.
