For a door (1) that moves transversely of a doorway to open and close, a door opening and closing mechanism comprises an elongated belt (4) anchored at its ends to the door (1) so as to extend generally in the direction of opening and closing movement of the door, a drive wheel (7) in toothed engagement with the belt, and guide wheels (8, 9) engaged with the belt (4) in cooperation with the drive wheel (7) such that the belt follows a sinuous path past the wheels with a determined length of the belt in toothed engagement with the drive wheel. An electric motor (14) rotates the drive wheel (7) to drive the belt (4) past the drive wheel (7) and hence to move the door (1) in its opening or closing direction. <IMAGE> |
