A heat stabilized polyamide comprises (a) 0.001-5% by wt. of a copper compound, e.g. cuprous iodide or cupric acetate, and (b) 0À001- 5% by wt. of a phosphonium halide: in which R 1 is H or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radical, R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are the same or different and represent, optionally substituted, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals; examples of (b) are; tributylmethylphosphonium iodide, triphenylphosphonium hydroiodide, tributylphosphonium hydroiodide, trimethylphenylphosphonium iodide, and tris- (# - cyanoethyl) - benzylphosphonium iodide. The stabilizers may be added to the polyamide after polymerization, e.g. in a melt extruder, or may be added to the monomers before condensation. |
