The system has multiple computer nodes associated with different units associated with the fabrication plant. A computer network interconnects these nodes. Each node forms a local virtual network processor. This virtual processor notifies all other virtual processors when a database of production control information is open or closed at the node. The virtual processor creates or destroys an entry in the local virtual database when notification is received that a database is open or closed at another node, establishes a connection with one of the other nodes, and maintains communication between a database and each of the entries in the local virtual databases.
