PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning picture reader which has the large reading width of a picture and is excellent in portability. SOLUTION: Two image sensors are provided in a scanning picture reader and the respective sensors are housed individually in casings whose relative positions can be varied. The casings are connected rotatably or movably in parallel to make a folding or sliding device to arrange the image sensors in parallel in a form (a) where the casings are superposed and nearly serially in a form (b) where the casings are opened. In the superposed state, its size is reduced to be suited to portable use and in an opened state and by reading a picture in the opened form, the reading width is increased. By reading the image with the two image sensors in the superposed state, resolution or a scanning speed is improved.
