An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method for selecting a color of a product using a potential purchaser computer coupled to a host computer system over a network. The method includes receiving a request at the host computer system from the potential purchaser computer to order a product in a first color. The host computer system searches a database to determine if the ordered product in the first color is in stock or out of stock. The potential purchaser computer is notified that the product in the first color is an out of stock product. A database of in stock products is searched for in stock products having an in stock color close to the first color. The potential purchaser computer is notified of the results of the search. |
