PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a failure in feeding sheet material, to perform recovery work from the failure to normally feed, and to improve performance in taking out the sheet material when jamming occurs. SOLUTION: This device comprises sheet feeding means 7, 8A, 8B for feeding the sheet material S loaded on a sheet material accommodating part with separating the sheet material one by one, feeding failure detecting means 70A, 70B, 70C placed on a downstream side to detect the failure in feeding the sheet material by the sheet feeding means, and a control means for controlling the sheet feeding means based on results detected by the feeding failure detecting means. The controlling means controls the sheet feeding means so as to return the sheet material in feeding to the reverse direction of the feeding direction and feed again with separating the sheet material one by one based on a result indicating the failure in feeding detected by the feeding failure detecting means.
