The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling a heating phase at least of one catalytic converter located in the exhaust gas channel of an internal combustion engine, whereby heating procedures are activated during the heating phase by influencing operational parameters pertaining to the internal combustion engine. An engine load is determined during said heating phase and the heating procedures are deactivated in load phases when the engine load is operating above a load threshold (non-active phases).
