PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, capable of obtaining a high-definition image as an output image by executing optimized smoothing processing to a noise quantity increasing, depending on the increase of the density value of a read image. SOLUTION: This image reader, for photoelectrically converting an image by an image pickup device to obtain it as image data, is provided with a smoothing processing means 101 for executing smoothing processing for nearly fixing a noise quantity in the prescribed density area of the image data.
