PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recorder which can accelerate image update in a fast reproduction mode and also satisfactorily perform rewinding reproduction in the recorder, which records video data for high-speed reproduction in an independent area on a medium. SOLUTION: This recorder has an image data extracting mean 103 for extracting image data from an inputted digital compressed video signal, a data for high-speed reproduction generating means, which reduces the data amount of the extracted image data and prepares data for high-speed reproduction and a data arranging means 106 which arranges the data for high-speed reproduction at a prescribed position on a track corresponding to a scan track scanned by a rotating magnetic head in the high-speed reproduction mode. The data for high-speed reproduction generating means due to the program processing of a microprocessor 105. Data for fast forwarding and for rewinding are also respectively generated as the data for high-speed reproduction and are recorded at prescribed positions on the medium.
