A method for producing a phosphor which comprises spraying a phosphor material solution containing a metal element constituting the phosphor into a gas atmosphere, preferably by means of a nozzle having a specific structure, to form fine droplets, preferably classifying the droplets so as to provide droplets having a weight average particle diameter of 0.5 to 20 mu m and a particle size distribution wherein 90 wt % of droplets have a diameter two times or less the weight average particle diameter and at the same time increasing twofold or more the volume concentration of droplets in the gas, drying the droplets to form solid particles, preferably coating the surface of the solid particles with a modifying material, introducing the solid particles into a thermal decomposition synthesis furnace and heating them to effect a thermal decomposition synthesis, and preferably thereafter heating again at a temperature which is 100 DEG C or more lower than the thermal decomposition temperature. The method can be used for producing with ease a phosphor which is reduced in the amount of coagulated particles, has a spherical form, has a high purity, has uniform chemical composition, and is excellent in luminous characteristics.
