The invention relates to technologies for the production of graphic items and more particularly to hot stamping methods, especially to stamping methods using metal foils. According to the inventive method for applying images such as text and drawings to a free form surface, an image model is formed, whereby said image model is a negative of the text and/or the image or of another image, said negative being applied to a paper or a similar base. The model is then contacted with the medium used for intermediate support of the material to be applied, whereby the model is pressed against the material to be applied. The image negative is applied to the base by means of a printing or copying device with the aid of a toner which makes it possible to form bonds with the material to be applied when the model is contacted with the intermediate medium of the material to be applied. The intermediate medium for the material to be applied is then separated from the image model. The intermediate medium for the material to be applied, which contains residues of the material to be applied, is contacted with the desired surface, whereby said residues of the material to be applied are pressed against such a surface, said rests forming a positive image. As a result, bonds are formed between the material to be applied and said surface. The intermediate medium for the material to be applied and said surface are then separated. A film-based foil can be used as an intermediate medium for the material to be applied, whereby said film contains the material to be applied.
