A surfactant composition exhibiting excellent foaming properties, thickening properties, water solubility and stability over a wide pH range even in the presence of oily dirt. This composition comprises (a) a compound of general formula (I), (b) at least one member selected from among compounds represented by general formulae (II) and (III), and another surfactant other than the components (a) and (b) with the (a)/(b) weight ratio ranging from 99.99/0.01 to 80/20, wherein R<1>CO- is optionally hydroxylated C6-24 acyl; R<2> is C1-3 alkyl; and R<3> is C1-6 alkylene or alkenylene.
