The invention relates to a chip card comprising a non-volatile display device showing the current information contents. Energy is not required for operating said display device. The inventive card is provided with a first and a second means for storing information. The second means serves for storing information and as a means for displaying said information. Moreover, a means for writing the second memory is provided, which means enables to store corresponding information in a second memory on the card by means of an external read/write device and during or shortly before or after the read/write process of the memory/processor chip. Information is stored in the second memory in a non-volatile manner and can be optically read out of the second memory with the naked eye. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the means for writing the second memory are arranged on the card and are supplied with energy by the external read/write device which serves as a means for writing the first memory. In another preferred embodiment, there are no storage means arranged on the card other than the means for storing, whereby said last means also serves as non-volatile display. The external read/write device reads/writes information out of/in the means for storage, whereby said means is also a display.
