The system has an idle gear (52) mounted on a coaxial coupling mounted on a front or rear drive shaft (50,60) and connected by a chain to a transfer gear (62) mounted on the other drive shaft. An internal drum (85) sliding on the drive shaft has an outer friction surface (85a), so that it can be slid into and engage an external drum (81) with an inner friction surface (81a) fixed integrally on the idle gear.
