An interferometer for detecting a property of an environment includes a ligh t beam source, two planar waveguides and a phase difference detector. The plan ar waveguides are disposed parallel to each other and define a cavity between them. Each waveguide includes two couplers for respectively coupling and the n decoupling the beam of light in and out of the respective waveguide. The two portions of light outcoupled from the waveguides are combined and detected b y the phase difference detector. The phase difference changes according to the substance which flows through the cavity, and the coatings applied between t he waveguides and the substance.
