A safety fuel tank and filler cap apparatus (10, 40, 56, 68, 105) is disclosed for use with apowered implement (E) such as a lawnmower, tiller, weed trimmer or the like. The apparatusincludes a switch member (S, 28, 48, 61, 69, 117, 120) mounted on a fuel cap(19, 38, 41, 57, 74,90, 97) and tank (14, 106) that disallow engine operation when the filler cap is separated fromthe tank such as during refueling.
