PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of starting a multi-stage compression system and the multi-stage compression system capable of preventing a propagating stall without complicating the system. SOLUTION: A method of starting a multi-stage compression system comprises the steps of starting a first compressor 5 and a second compressor 7 in parallel state, leading a part of the discharged gas from the first compressor 5 gradually to the suction side of the second compressor 7 so as to reduced the final amount of gas from the first compressor 5, shutting off a passage 10 for the discharged gas when the final discharged gas amount becomes zero, leading all discharged gas from the first compressor 5 to the suction side of the second compressor 7 so as to operate the first compressor 5 and second compressor 7 in series. First the first compressor 5 and second compressor 7 are operated in parallel with each other so that a total pressure ratio is reduced (namely, aerodynamic mismatch is lowered) so as to suppress a propagating stall, and then the first and second compressors 5 and 7 are coupled in series to each other so as to realize a two-stage compression system. Thus, a swing stall at the start can be prevented without complicating a system such that the compressors 5 and 7 are modified into variable pitch types.
