PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst which is highly stable to a carboxylic acid and can efficiently and stably isomerize 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol(CHDM). SOLUTION: This method for producing trans-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol is characterized by heating the cis- and trans-isomer mixture of the 1,4- cyclohexanedimethanol in the presence of the oxide of at least one metal selected from the group 4 in the periodic table.
